Monster Hunter International
by Larry Correia

Welcome to Monster Hunter International.

Five days after Owen Zastava Pitt pushed his insufferable boss out of a fourteenth story window, he woke up in the hospital with a scarred face, an unbelievable memory, and a job offer.

It turns out that monsters are real. All the things from myth, legend, and B-movies are out there, waiting in the shadows. Officially secret, some of them are evil, and some are just hungry. On the other side are the people who kill monsters for a living. Monster Hunter International is the premier eradication company in the business. And now Owen is their newest recruit.

It's actually a pretty sweet gig, except for one little problem. An ancient entity known as the Cursed One has returned to settle a centuries old vendetta. Should the Cursed One succeed, it means the end of the world, and MHI is the only thing standing in his way. With the clock ticking towards Armageddon, Owen finds himself trapped between legions of undead minions, belligerent federal agents, a cryptic ghost who has taken up residence inside his head, and the cursed family of the woman he loves.

Business is good . . .

About the Author

Larry Correia is hopelessly addicted to two things: guns and B-horror movies. He lists his occupations: gun dealer, firearms instructor, accountant, and writer, and is part owner of FBMG (Fuzzy Bunny Movie Guns) a company specializing in firearms and movie props. He shoots competitively and is a certified concealed weapons instructor. Larry resides in Utah with his very patient wife and family. He has also designed a special patch for the agents of Monster Hunter International, Inc. As he puts it, "If you don't look good while you're killing stuff, then you're not really a monster hunter."

Much better than I thought it might be from the set up, but after reading it, I think it was as good as other Correia books (Hard Magic series). It never ceases to amaze me how people react to a story about using guns. How could you NOT develop close relationships to guns if you depend on them for your life, day in and day out, going up against werewolves and vampires? 'Gun porn'? Some people need to get over themselves. In this context, it really is more of a technology fetish. And what's wrong exactly with dissing Feds? Read the new book on Fast and Furious. Reality, being stranger and more disgusting than fiction, is making this Correia book look like a love note to the Feds. (And there's not really a super anti-Fed rant in the book, anyway. There are just a few uber lefties that are offended if you don't outright worship the government. Sick bastards.)

Absolutely GREAT READ!!! Engrossing, fast paced, can't say enough good about it. Finally, we have an author with a decent background in weapons and their proper use. No ray guns, just reality. Sissy, liberal progressives will not like this book. Undoubtedly they will use words such as "gun porn," "neo-nazi," "no redeeming social value," etc. to describe their reaction. Too bad. Yes, Matilda - people really do use weapons in the manner described; and, for serious social purposes. So, if you're NOT a wimp, you will really enjoy this book and its sequel. After all, any book which starts out with its protagonist throwing his awful, bullying, credit-stealing boss out of a fourteen story window, almost has to be a GREAT READ!!

I have to correct my review form last night. Yes there was a section right after the first part where the protagonist is introduced with how he comes to be where he is for the story premise there is a really poorly composed section. I don't want to go into too much detail as it means spoilers and don't like people who do that. Just suffice to say it gets pretty awkward to downright ugly in the writing --even the campiness is bad, really bad as in not funny. BUT, after that second part this story and the writing seems as if a different writer is at the helm. The story really takes off and tightens up. I NEVER write reviews let alone early before I am done but I genuinely thought I would not finish a novel for the first time in 20-yrs. But now after reading until oh-dark-hundred this AM I love this story and do want more. It's a riot and a fun story with that special Bruce Campbell appeal to it!! So I take back everything bad I wrote, save maybe my that second part being written for the Idaho Nazi crowd--because that was FUNNY and it works well with gun-porn...hahahaha... As a reader you really have to let this novel run it's course as it starts very strong but there is some very awkward writing style which as you move from the early part into some deeper background info that awkward writing style soon dominates the story and is a distraction. Then comes the gun-porn. And not very mature gun-porn at that. Call it gratuitous gun-porn with no redeeming value. ;) UIt was here that I became disenchanted with the novel, my BIG mistake as after that last bit of background and the gun-porn the story ramps up big-time!! I think anyone with the imagination to develop this world has a great story inside somewhere. I hope to see it before I croak. Now rather than feeling let down, I am extremely happy I also burned a credit and bought the Audible version. The reader is GREAT and I can work while I "read". Shame on me.

I have to consider it somewhat of a 'guilty pleasure' because I don't have to put up with the usual irritatingly smug opinions passed off as 'characterization' of capitalism, business people, military, or concealed weapon carriers, but I just really appreciate the fast pace and good entertainment! Thank you for writing it!

Slightly below average writing quality. Reads like it was written by a life-long member of the Tea Party. Periodic digs at the federal government, democrats, gun laws, etc. If you don't live and breathe guns and army, may as well skip this.

I also own the original self-published copy of the book. Talk about a page-turner! This is one of those books where if the seat you're in is really comfortable, and you have a steady light source, you won't notice time passing until you finish the entire book. (And yes, this has even happened after multiple readings.) YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK!
