Torch of Freedom
by David Weber and Eric Flint

Someone is assassinating the leaders of both the Star Kingdom of Manticore and the recently liberated former slave planet of Torch. Though most believe the Republic of Haven is behind the murders, Anton Zilwicki and Havenite secret agent Victor Cachat believe there is another sinister player behind the scenes. Queen Berry of Torch narrowly escaped one assassination attempt, and a security officer from Beowulf has been assigned to protect her, a task complicated by the young monarch's resentment of bodyguards, and the officer's growing attachment to her. Meanwhile, powerful forces in the Solarian League are maneuvering against each other to gain the upper hand, not realizing or, perhaps, not caring that their power struggle is threatening the League's very existence and could plunge the galaxy into war.

Once again New York Times best-selling authors David Weber and Eric Flint join forces in an exciting new novel in the Honorverse.

At six dollars, this is a good enough book at a fair price. It has been out too long to waste energy flailing the authors about its style. Besides, if you've read the previous 17 or 18 books in the series then you know damn well you can't stop now. :)

In days gone by, David Weber was famous for his pulse-pounding action and page-turning plots. You couldn't put them down. As time wears on, perhaps ego and lack of new ideas takes over. Or maybe we should blame his co-author. In any event...This book still has much to recommend it, but it is a pale echo of the best of the Honor-verse books. Often ponderous, often long-winded, often using a wearying device of long, long dialogs between characters (to the point where I wondered if I was reading the script of "My Dinner With Andre") to set up histories and plot lines, this book is frequently tedious and clearly could have used an effective editor. If it were 1/3rd shorter, it could have helped a lot. But the authors' conviction that everyone should be and is fascinated with every ponderous word they write has subsumed all. Call it the Robert Jordan syndrome. If you like the Honor-verse, this is a necessary read as it sheds light on some things that happened in Storm from the Shadows (which was a lot better), but this diversion and its back-story is a bit unwieldy. In fairness, the last fourth of the book, from the escape from the Alignment to the Battle of Torch, redeems a lot of the book. Be prepared to muddle through, though.

More disjointed than CROWN OF SLAVES - like all recent Honorverse novels, too dependent on knowledge of the other books from WAR OF HONOR on in the series. Still a highly readable adventure with all of co-writer Flint's Leftist Humanist quirks - as Queen Berry of Torch falls in love with an unlikely candidate, Havenite spy Victor Cachat deliberately places himself at Honor Harrington's mercy, Mesan genetic supermen develop consciences, and a powerful reminder that terrorists acts NEVER happen in a vacuum.

Pretty good read. This side series novel is much better than the contemporaneous Storm from the Shadows. I think Eric Flint helps to hold down some of the excess Weber verbiage. This seems to complete the set-up for the next mainline novel in the Honor Harrington series.

The non-linearity of the publishing order & in-world timeline is starting to confuse me.

Chop the first three quarters of the book off and sell it based on that. Boring, boring, boring.

The second half of the book really shines...better than the snippets/sample chapters...personally I think the CoS cast of characters is actually more fun than the mainline story

I thought Torch did a better job than Storm of moving the plot along and coming to an ending that isn't quite as much of a cliffhanger. Still can't wait for Mission of Honor, though!

looking good but timing a bit skewed as the story seems to take place before Storm from the shadows

I love what I'm reading, but much like Storm From the Shadows, I feel like all this is just setup for the next mainline book. Hopefully something will actually HAPPEN in the last quarter when it's released.
