Ragnarok - eARC
by Patrick A. Vanner

Captain Alexandra "Alex" McLaughlin is not a woman to be underestimated. Under her petite exterior is a spine of solid steel and a disposition to laugh in the face of impending death. A former member of the Terran Navy's elite force, the Dead Jokers, electronic-warfare pilots with a mortality rate to match that of old Japan's Kamikazes, Alex is a born survivor. But sometimes survival can be a curse.

Humanity is locked in a war of survival with the Xan-Sskarn, an alien race that refuses to acknowledge the rights of "weaker" creatures to live. It is a war that will not end with a peace treaty, but only the complete subjugation of one species to the other. And right now, the alien side is winning.

However, the enemy on the outside is not the only one to be faced. As the battles take on an eerily familiar pattern of no-win scenarios, Alex realized the horrifying truth; humanity has a traitor, and it's somebody close. As each battle brings more death, Alex's ghosts grow and so does her desire for vengeance. There is only one way for this to end, and Alex is just the human to take it there—to Ragnarok.

I found the story to be good in places but over all felt like I had read parts of this before in other books. I was also frustrated by several "loose ends" especially in regards to the Loki pilots. Maybe it all comes together in the sequel (if there is one) In the end I enjoyed it enough to pick up a second book by the author, but wished I had waited for the normally priced edition.

I have to say that I do agree for the most part with previous comments. However I did a search and from what I can tell this is Mr. Vanner's first book. With that said I think it's unfair to compare him to the likes of Weber, Ringo, and Bujord, all those author's have dozens of books under their belts. I hope the author read the more constructive comments and improves with his next outing. I wouldn't recommend purchasing the ARC, but the normal $6 would be acceptable and a good read for he money. He needs work especially in character development and he is obviously a Weber fan but doesn't appear to have the prior service understanding of the military. I think with a little help he will grow into a good author, but we need to give him constructive advice not just bash him.

It's a start, but it's a fairly bad version of a David Weber and John Ringo love child. I expected more out of this, especially since the author's name is strikingly similar to one of Ringo's characters from his Ghost series. Really, I was hoping that this was Ringo's foray into space opera under a nom de plume. I hope I'm wrong.

A story with little depth, poor character development and some clumsy plot devices. I think it is one of the worst books I have read on baen.

Rather tedious and uninspired. Lots of detail in tasks best left to lower ranks. Might have been exciting 20 years ago but more recent work by others makes it pale by comparison. I usually buy ARCs by known authors because I can't wait for their latest work. In this case even the normal list price of ~$6 would be too much. Quite disappointing.

Overall I agree with most of the not so good statements made about this novel. For an "experienced" author my rating wood be two stars... long long way to bujold, weber or Hemry (Campbell) to name a few of my favorites. he seems to be new- so three stars.

Overall I agree with some of the other statements made about this novel. It was short, it has many similar elements to Weber, and Ringo. But it had its own flavor, to me some of the interactions between characters was very sharp in the military sense. I am looking forward to more from this author, and hopefully we can see him spread his wings.

Mostly "alright" nothing special, but still a decent read. my problem is with almost all of the twists/surprises to me, is not believable... which reading Weber and Ringo book I rarely have that reaction.

I am very disappointed in this book. Weak, to the point of not existing plot and terrible character development. Hopefully the writer will get better with practice since it´s hard to imagine him getting any worse.

Mostly entertaining, but with little character development and a rather weak plot.
