Monster Hunter Alpha - eARC
by Larry Correia

Dirty Harry meets Twilight. #3 in the break-out series and a follow-up to Monster Hunter International and Monster Hunter Vendetta.

Earl Harbinger may be the leader of Monster Hunter International, but he's also got a secret. Nearly a century ago, Earl was cursed to be a werewolf. When Earl receives word that one of his oldest foes, a legendarily vicious werewolf that worked for the KGB, has mysteriously appeared in the remote woods of Michigan, he decides to take care of some unfinished business. But another force is working to bring about the creation of a whole new species of werewolf. When darkness falls, the final hunt begins, and the only thing standing in their way is a handful of locals, a lot of firepower, and Earl Harbinger's stubborn refusal to roll over and play dead.

Bloody Excellent! Great fill in of story about Earl and early MHI a bit. This book has more twists and turns than an Anaconda. Really enjoyable, I don't think I saw a single error in punctuation at all. Tough to put down. Its like Schlock mercenary's "Deep archives, productivity will suffer." Mine did. And well worth it! Great read, looking forward to more of Correia's stuff soon. When will soon be here?

I usually don't burn through a book in one afternoon but..........OHMYGODICOULDN'TPUTITDOWN!! Thank you Larry for such a gripping and hilarious page turner! I enjoyed the first two novels despite my aversion to the first person voice and thought that the journal entries at the start of the chapters really added some flesh to the bones of Earl. If you liked the first two I highly suggest this one as well. Cheers!!

Only a very few errors (I forgot where, and it being an e-document, I can't pinpoint the pages, unfortunately), all of them grammatical/spelling in nature. The story itself was, in a single word, gripping. It had the hard, dark tone of Larry's new (and excellent) Grimnoir Chronicles series set perfectly into his already established Monster Hunter universe while still maintaining the great wit that makes MH such a fun read. I still am having some trouble squaring away the new model guns in the series with the timeline. If MH is set about 6-7 years after the 1995 incident, then how is it that SCARS, Springfield XD's, FN MAGs, etc. are mentioned? The XD wasn't even the XD at the time (I still think it was the Czech HS2000), and the FN Mag is a recent introduction. OR, have I simply gotten the timeline wrong and MH is set in the later 2000's? Anyway, that's about the only discrepancy that I can discern, and it has yet to hinder ANY enjoyment of the series. It also has the most minimal impact on this installment, considering Earl's love for his old, reliable firearms of yesteryear.

Larry, I have to say this has been the best book in the MHI series. I really liked the first 2 books about Owen. I can't wait for the next book. (Possibly about Agent Franks and the California incident.) And who could be the Fourth Champion in the Great War. (We know that the current champions are Owen, Julie, and Harbinger.

7. Russell on 5/15/2011, said:

This novel could be subtitled: "Earl's Story". It merely mentions my more favored characters, Z & wife, and it lacks all the kookiness of MHI's prime crew the outstanding secondary characters introduced into each of the preceding novels. It is also somewhat darker than the prior stories. Nevertheless, I felt compelled to read it in one sitting. Highly recommended. The ARC version seemed flawless in terms of spelling, grammar, etc. KEEP THEM COMING PLEASE

Great story which provides a bit of backstory to one of my favorite characters in the MHI universe. Keep it up Larry!
