Captain Vorpatril's Alliance - eARC
by Lois McMaster Bujold

Captain Ivan Vorpatril is happy with his relatively uneventful bachelor's life of a staff officer to a Barrayaran admiral. Ivan, cousin to Imperial troubleshooter Miles Vorkosigan, is not far down the hereditary list for the emperorship. Thankfully, new heirs have directed that headache elsewhere, leaving Ivan to enjoy his life on Komarr, far from the Byzantine court politics of his home system. But when an old friend in Barrayaran intelligence asks Ivan to protect an attractive young woman who may be on the hit list of a criminal syndicate, Ivan's chivalrous nature takes over. It seems danger and adventures have once more found Captain Vorpatril.

Tej Arqua and her half-sister and servant Rish are fleeing the violent overthrow of their clan on free-for-all planet Jackson's Whole. Now it seems Tej may possess a hidden secret of which even she may not be aware. It's a secret that could corrupt the heart of a highly regarded Barayarran family and provide the final advantage for the thugs who seek to overthrow Tej's homeworld.

But none of Tej's formidable adversaries have counted on Ivan Vorpatril. For behind Ivan's façade of wry and self effacing humor lies a true and cunning protector who will never leave a distressed lady in the lurch—up to and including making the ultimate sacrifice to keep her from harm: the treasured and hardwon freedom from his own fate as a scion of Barrayar.

Bujold builds brilliantly on her world and characters. This was an extremely fun book to read. I'm especially fond of the scene at the end involving the ImpSec HQ - unexpected and laugh-out-loud funny (especially Simon's comments and implied thoughts). It took me a little while to realize that this book occurs before Cryoburn. I'm encouraged by this, as it gives me hope that we may see other out-of-sequence books about Miles' mercenary/agent days.

I liked the book, Ivan finally got married, the only way that idiot could. He he... I missed Miles. Hopefully she will write at least one book with Miles as the Count. This book was really funny, especially from Ivan's view. I laughed a lot!! Was this book prior to Cryoburn? If you like the Miles series you will like this one even if you only have miles in passing (very very small part).

Yet another GREAT book from Lois. She is less prolific that many other Authors, but the finished product makes up for it.

Such a very sound book. Unhappy it ended. I think it is a bit more nuanced than many readers found it to be - that is Ivan Xav, while not an idiot, is not perfect - he justs believes in his own comfort. Tej is just right for him.

I'd love to be able to give this one SIX stars. I'm still recovering from the shocks of stepping on the roller-coaster once more, but it was worth the trip, as we get to know Ivan from HIS viewpoint. Lots of surprises, including one scene where, for a moment, I wondered of Lois was channeling Edgar Allen Poe, even as I was gasping in utter disbelief. I just finished it this weekend. Cover me. I'm going back in.

Started reading this at 10:00 PM with the intention of reading a couple of chapters. Had to stop at 02:30 AM, and started again this morning. Every time I got to the end of a chapter I had to keep reading to see what would happen next. Deffinately the best book since "A Civil Campagne". What will Ivan do next?

Awesomely good book! Lois has crushed this one right out of the park, over the wall, through the lights and heading downtown. The Ivan point of view was stunningly well done. Very fun to see the Vorkosigans/Simon/Gregor from a different point of view. Just like Winterfair Gifts was wonderful for it's point of view of Armsman Roic. Think that... about 40 times more. I literally couldn't put it down. So much fun, witty, wise and wonderful! Moved fast, a lot of great twists and turns and "ok now where the heck is this going??" etc etc As Anne said, she started laughing at Chapter 5 and didn't stop until the end. Yeah same here. Read some of the more quotable lines to my wife who got some good chuckles from the total far left field that some seem to come from. This book is just as good as Civil Campaign in its own way as well. Loved it! I really look forward to the audio version as well.

After the disappointments of "Cryoburn" the old Bujold is back. Nothing will ever top "A Civil Campaign" but "Captain Vorpatril's Alliance" is at least the equal of any of her others. After "Diplomatic Immunity" and the disastrous "Winterfair Gifts" I think Bujold has realized she has mined Miles for about all she can. But over the years she has given us a host of other characters waiting in the wings to step on-stage. This time it's Ivan, with support from Simon, Alys, and of all people, Byerly Vorrutyer. Bujold remains the Mistress of the dry and witty turn of phrase, and the dialogue of "CVA" flows much better than parts of "Cryoburn" which at times seemed stilted and forced. At one point I asked my wife how far she'd read, and was answered Ivan just told Alys. My reply, she's just invited them to dinner--it's a Vorkosiverse book, what could possibly go wrong? The supper lacks the hilarity of "Campaign" but has nuances to pay attention to, 'nuff said. Perhaps we wondered how Illyan, head adrenaline junkie of Adrenaline Junkie Central could so quietly vanish into a peaceful retirement? The answer is here: he couldn't. And for those who've pondered the past hints that Ivan perhaps isn't so feckless we learn of the childhood loss and political danger that led him to hide behind the persona of "Ivan, you idiot" even as it grated on him. I'm pleased that Bujold seems to have recovered from the inevitable dealing with the death of Count Aral, and is ready to retire Miles to the supporting cast for a while. I'm looking forward hopefully to finding out more about Mark and Kareen in a future book. Bujold's and the Vorkosiverse are back in style. Buy it, you'll like it.

Once again - well worth buying the E-Arc! The "Ivan Book" was as good as I expected, and I wound up reading this in two sittings, because I could not stop turning the pages. To compare it to "A Civil Campaign" or "Cordelia's Honor" is somewhat unfair - but I will have to go back and re-read those, now...

I wish there was more resonance in this book. I have to say that until I got to the end of "Cryoburn", I really wasn't feeling it, but the way Bujold created resonance with prior books really saved it for me. In Ivan's book, we do get to see more of other people's issues - Alys', Simon's, and some of Ivan's, but he still doesn't feel as real as Miles/Mark/Cordelia were in previous books. If you love the series, get the book.

Loved it. More in the style of Komarr and A Civil Campaign. I loved getting Ivan's POV and have always suspected that he was a greatly underappreiciated character. Lots of action, romance, and suspense, Barrayar style.

I found the long-awaited "Ivan Book" absolutely marvelous, and very very satisfying! Thoroughly enjoyable! Ivan's self-insight, inner process, and growth as, finally, a POV character, are fascinating to watch unfold. And through Tej as the other POV character, LMB does a beautiful job of putting not only Ivan, but much about Barrayar and its history, Lady Alys, and even Byerly into big-picture context as well. Tej sees her Ivan Xav (even her name for him gives him room to be more than he was, and puts him in bigger context) as everything he is now and can be, not overshadowed in contrast to Miles or by his mother's chronic critiques. Ivan makes a delightful hero - smart, competent, efficient - and unlike his desperate-to-be-seen-as-larger-than-life-heroic cousin, reluctant, which makes it even sweeter to watch him in action. This book is charming, action-packed, romantic, psychologically and culturally brilliant, and liberally sprinkled with laugh-out-loud hilarity in the midst of the drama. I loved it and am already into the second read for deeper appreciation of the subtleties now that i Know What Happens. Enjoy!

Very different than some of the series, but a lot of fun. I was expecting Ivan's book to be fun, since I had noticed that the times when Ivan was around were among the funniest times in the Miles books. I just finished and will be re-reading soon.

This was a laugh out loud book. Yes there are many complaints about time between books, but it's worth it every time. Lois is a fantastic writer, if your new to this series I recommend reading them in chronological order. "Dreamweaver’s Dilemma" (short story) Falling Free Shards of Honor Barrayar The Warrior's Apprentice The Vor Game Cetaganda Ethan of Athos Brothers in Arms Borders of Infinity Mirror Dance Memory Komarr A Civil Campaign "Winterfair Gifts" (novella part of Irresistible Forces anthology) Diplomatic Immunity Cryoburn Captain Vorpatril's Alliance

An enjoyable story in the same vein as 'A Civil Campaign', with a little action near the start and the end of the book. Not as action packed as some of the earlier books in the series, and the sense of suspense or emotion is not that big. However, it provides a rare opportunity to see through Ivan's point of view and see him shine and grow. It was also nice to see Miles and Co again, even if it was just briefly. Also, since the events of this book occur before the events in 'Cryoburn', we don't get to see what happens after the cliffhanger at the end of that book. Overall, a good but not great book, but i would not miss it :)

The beginning reminds me of the cloak and dagger elements of "Ethan of Athos", and as the story moves from Komarr to Barrayar takes on more of the flavor of "A Civil Campaign". Overall a greta read and I found myself giggling madly at some of Ivan's internal comments.

Ivan you idiot! I remember laughing so hard when Ivan got hit with that line. And it wasn't always fair. Well Ivan is in the thick of it now. Galactic espionage, hit men, and damsels in distress. Reads as good as some of the earlier books. He is no Miles but that is just fine. About time he got his own book.

I think I actually like Ivan as a character better than Miles. Miles is very over the top and hard to identify with unless you happen to be a crippled genius. Ivan is just a big oaf with a goofy grin that isn't SELF driven to his full potential. It's great to see events make him dig a bit deeper and realize some of that potential. I'd love to see more Ivan centric books.

Set before Cryoburn, this shows Ivan Xav Vorpatril at his best. He turns out to have hidden depths - which his mother, already knew. Jackson's Whole, the deal, genegineered people, death, plots, all can be found in this book. Cameos from Ekaterin, The Gregor, Simon Illyan and Coz Miles, enliven a great read.
