A novel of political intrigue from the normally apolitical David Drake. With his usual cynicism and realist perspective, Drake uses the assassination of an emperor (ok, technically "First Secretary") to examine the relationship between the political leadership that personifies a nation-state, and the civil servants who actually make the state function properly. The plight of the illegal aliens (in the most literal sense) is even more timely now than when the book was originally published as well. Ultimately it asks the question of what makes a nation-state "real", from the perspective of its police chief, its civil servants, its regional governor, its military officers, and its barely-tolerated and oft-abused immigrants.

I had read the first 1-2 chapters for free before I decided to buy it, so I kind of knew what I was getting. It is okay, but its age is showing (1998). In fact it feels even older, like some sci-fi from the 60's. Almost comic-like in its style, with caricature stereotype descriptions of the sleazy politicians that think they rule their little worlds. I don't regret buying it, but I will not be buying the rest in the series.

I had contacted David Drake awhile back about the series and he said his publisher was looking into re-publishing the series. I'm glad the first book is out and I look forward to the rest of the series. They are unique and delightful

I read the books of this series long ago, and they were some of my favorite space opera; I was so disappointed when the series (four somewhat related books) ended. I am glad that Baen in bringing them back into electronic print!
