I liked the novella about King Roger (which was why I bought it. Nothing overly dramatic, no big fights, just the political infighting between a far-sighted monarch and short-sighted peons. I've been growing more interested in the politics and less interested in the military stuff in this universe, so this was not bad. I was not very interested in the rest of the stuff (I have to suspend disbelief too much to take this universe *that* seriously). But if you're really into this universe, you might like it.

Not a bad read. I enjoyed the novella. Nothing particularly "wow, that's a surprise!" in the novella, but it fills in some minor background details. I agree with the many comments regarding Weber's recent books in the HH series. Mr. Weber, PLEASE spend less time on repetitious (verbatim) filler from other books and move the story along. How about finishing one or even two of your series before working on new series?

Really great book, filled with a great backstory and all kinds of tasty information about the people and things in the Honorverse. The cover shown above (showing Roger with the sorta-long wavy hair) is not the final cover. Roger Winton III doesn't look like that on the final cover I got. Oddly, the banner add at the top of the Baen site shows the correct cover.

One warning about the eArc (and eBook) editions. The illustrations are SMALL and there does not seem to be any way of enlarging them so you can see the the details or read the text in the maps. Aside from that there is lots of background details and history to fill in what occurred before the first book (or the limited history given in the "World of Honor" short stories. The compendium gives bios on lots of the characters from the SKM/SEM (including some Treecats) and Grayson. Also lots of specs on the space craft. One thing that is missing (although I might have missed it) is details on weapons. Also the information and history cuts off a few books back (ex: The space stations destroyed by the Oyster Bay attack are described as if they still exist). Hopefully there is a followup book in the pipeline doing what this book did but about Haven and the others.

eARC rating - From all recent HH books this is certainly the best. Maybe it's due to the novella format, or maybe due to the scope of time & event's that pass but there is finally a feeling of something happenig as opposed to the mainstream books. The compendium part is full of information for those of us interested in background material. All in all a very good entry in the series. And even if you aren't after deteils like me, the novella itself is well worth a read.
