The Ultimate Y2K Glitch....

1632 In the year 1632 in northern Germany a reasonable person might conclude that things couldn't get much worse. There was no food. Disease was rampant. For over a decade religious war had ravaged the land and the people. Catholic and Protestant armies marched and countermarched across the northern plains, laying waste the cities and slaughtering everywhere. In many rural areas population plummeted toward zero. Only the aristocrats remained relatively unscathed; for the peasants, death was a mercy.

2000 Things are going OK in Grantville, West Virginia. The mines are working, the buck are plentiful (it's deer season) and everybody attending the wedding of Mike Stearn's sister (including the entire membership of the local chapter of the United Mine Workers of America, which Mike leads) is having a good time.

THEN, EVERYTHING CHANGED....

When the dust settles, Mike leads a small group of armed miners to find out what's going on. Out past the edge of town Grantville's asphalt road is cut, as with a sword. On the other side, a scene out of Hell; a man nailed to a farmhouse door, his wife and daughter Iying screaming in muck at the center of a ring of attentive men in steel vests. Faced with this, Mike and his friends don't have to ask who to shoot.

At that moment Freedom and Justice, American style, are introduced to the middle of The Thirty Years War.

Loved it and now I will HAVE to read the whole series. It's a stroke of brilliance to give us a couple of free books to hook us so that we will then be eager to buy the rest of the series at very reasonable prices.

This was a fabulous surprise, to stumble on such an interesting and consuming series. The characters are interesting, the story line gripping. I can't wait to read the rest of them.

Great book I already have. But my wife wants me to cut down on the clutter in my library so I am starting with the free copies and will proceed to the non-free stuff I already own as my budget allows. If only the financial/business publishers and other SF publishers. If I send dust covers to you doe that count as a contribution?

So much love, attention to detail, poetry, and care was lavished on this novel that it has a special place in my collection. Subsequent volumes, while enjoyable, simply cannot measure up to this world building experience. Superb fiction.

Great Alternate history with a strong base in the real history of the time. It is well written with strong character development and enough background to place the reader in time of the story.

I Love this series. It's educational and apropriate to the current situation in America. What do the ideals behind our founding documents really mean anyway? What a great way to explore that question.

It was good, but the author's repeated sermons on trade unions came off as too preachy. Who was the villain of this novel? The corporate executive and not feudalism? Sad.

Really good read and well worth having the whole series on your PDA or whatever you use. Like others, I still love a "real" book but I have been reading ebooks on my Palm phones for 4 years and find it so useful to have a book or ten sitting there, many bought from Baen. Great company, excellent site and brilliant value compared to the rip off rates of many other sites and companies who charge more for an eBook than I can get the paperback for in the local bookshop!
