War of Honor
by David Weber
Publisher: Baen Books

NO ONE WANTED ANOTHER WAR

Thomas Theisman didn't. After risking his life and a fresh round of civil war to overthrow the Committee of Public Safety's reign of terror and restore the Republic of Haven's ancient Constitution, an interstellar war was the last thing he wanted.

Baron High Ridge didn't. The Prime Minister of Manticore was perfectly happy with the war he had. No one was shooting anyone else at the moment, and as long as he could spin out negotiations on the formal treaty of peace, his government could continue to milk all those "hostilities only" tax measures for their own partisan projects.

His Imperial Majesty Gustav didn't. Now that the fighting between the Star Kingdom and the Havenites had ended, the Andermani Emperor had his own plans for Silesia, and he was confident he could achieve them without a war of his own.

Protector Benjamin didn't. His people had made too deep a commitment to the Manticoran Alliance, in blood as well as treasure, for him to want to risk seeing it all thrown away.

And Honor Harrington certainly didn't. The "Salamander" had seen the inside of too many furnaces already, knew too much about how much war cost.

Unfortunately, what they wanted didn't matter....

800 pages, 90% of which is tedious geopolitical conversation and maneuvering. If you like that sort of thing then you will be in heaven. Otherwise, one can still extract a decent 200 page read by rapidly scanning a sentence or two per page and then immediately hitting the page advance key until a few pages appear that suit your interest in action or in a character that you still care about.

AI, the issue with not being able to download to nook is easily resolved. Download the freeware program calibre. It is wonderful program that works across a wide range of items. It has even allowed me to download my personal novel to it so I can more easily proofread it. As far as the book, David and Dan agree completely. The politics are necessary for later books, world building, so to speak, but politics are slow.

This is a customer support issue. I downloaded the epub version of the book so that I could read it on my Nook Touch. After copying the epub file over to my Nook Touch I attempt to access the book, and I get an error that "This Nook cannot read this file. It may be in an unsupported format." I was disappointed that I also could not find a way to contact Baen Books either with email or through their web site, to complain. Previous ebooks have worked fine.

War of Honor is, IMHO, the weakest of the series thus far (with the previous Ashes of Honor taking second place). I came to the series late and have been reading them in quick succession. The last two have been disappointing. I can understand using political conversations to setup the action, but the dialogue was often repetitive and simply annoying. Some of the characters seem a bit too obtuse. It felt a bit like the author needed to reach a page quota. Given a series of this length, it is asking too much for a home run every time. I am hoping for a return to form in the subsequent novels.

I thought all the previous Honor Harrington stories were great, this one however had too much tedious politics and too little action for my liking. IMHO politics is mostly of interest to those who are actively involved in it. Not that this is a bad read mind you, it’s just a bit slow for those who love action filled space opera.

The action in this novel was slower paced but intense than previous books. Honor was Fantastic as usual and we have learned more about Earl white Haven and others that have been mentioned on the periphery of other stories.

7. Steven on 8/24/2007, said:

If I had a critism it would be that there was too much politics not enough battle but I quess c'est la vie, should remember Clauswitz's (I think) War is just the continuance of politics(or something to that effect)... should be considered the set up novel for the powerful "At All Costs" ..... I liked it all anyway, the Peeps really stepped up a notch and though Honor's enemies they became a sympathetic group especially compared to High Ridge and company....
