Manxome Foe
by John Ringo and Travis S. Taylor

Startling Innovations.
Cool Space Ships.
Evil Alien Butt Blasted to Smithereens!

Outpost Attack!

Gateway HD 36951 lies in ruins.  All survivors slaughtered.  A single, truncated message sent back to Earth.  Something very bad indeed is afoot, and the A.S.S. Vorpal Blade (read: nuclear submarine converted to warp-drive space ship) is sent to investigate.  But the ferocious, voracious enemy Dreen wait for no man (or other carbon-based lifeform), and the Blade and her crew are soon the only hope for an alien species pushed to the brink of extinction.  Turn back and abandon a new ally or face a heavily-armed Dreen destroyer head on

For the Blade's rough-and-ready crew, it's no contest.  And now, with an infusion of technical know-how from humanity's new ally, chaos itself has become a weapon!

New York Times and USA Today multiple best-seller John Ringo
joins with NASA and DOD consultant
Travis S. Taylor — author of Warp Speed and The Quantum Connectio

"If Tom Clancy were writing SF, it would read much like John Ringo."
Philadelphia Weekly Press on New York Times multiple best-seller John Ringo.

"[T]his thoroughly enjoyable ride should appeal to techno-thriller fans as well as to military SF buffs."
Publishers Weekly on John Ringo and Travis S. Taylor's Into the Looking Glass.

Some of the best modern SF out there. The only issue is that you may need to pick up the earlier books in the series for this to make sense. Taylor does not waste time or space spoon feeding you back story.

Am rereading it for the fifth time. I love this series. I can see Dr. Taylor as Bill and John as the chief. Their lives the way they wish they were.

@Peter: maybe read the first books (sample chapters) in the series first if you want to enjoy the experience

Picked this up as part of the monthly bundle. I could barely start it, much less finish it. IDCATP**! I usually like Ringo fairly well, and I really liked Honor of the Clan. But this book, along with Eye of the Storm, just don't do anything for me. (At least I was able to finish EotS.) **I don't care about these people

The tag line promises much: ***Startling Innovations. Cool Space Ships. Evil Alien Butt Blasted to Smithereens!*** While moderately entertaining, the only "Butt Blasted to Smithereens" is Ringo and Taylor's attempt to parody their own work. That said, Ringo and Taylor deserve credit for attempting what might have been a really great parody. Unfortunately, they seem unwilling to let go, and we end up with a flip-flopping and confusing sequence of serious-comedic characters and vignettes that falls as flat as the story and stereotypes they attempt to lampoon. There are a few entertaining, funny, and over-the-top characters and scenes (e.g., Miriam, Tcha, on occasion Spectre, the "President", and of course the drooling anti-French rant) who unfortunately had to share the stage, and are frequently interrupted by marginally more believable but much-too-serious and droll characters (e.g., Sgt. Bergstrom and his saccharine love interest, along with most of the other *cough* Marines *cough*). If Ringo and Taylor are serious about parody (or is it satire? hard to tell), they need to enlist outside help for their next effort. If you're looking for a really good laugh, I suggest instead "Pyramid Scheme", or (if you can find it) Harrison's classic "Star Smashers of the Galaxy Rangers".

A solid story that moves along well. The only problem is at the end, where it seems that the authors were in a rush to tie everything up.

This is just another perfect example of why Ringo is the Master of SF. The mix of physics, action and suspense is nothing less than what we've come to expect from him. It's action scenes are some of his best yet, and finally get the ASS Vorpal Blade into the fray! I must read for Ringo lovers!
