Duainfey - eARC
by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller

Rebecca Beauvelley is a ruined woman.

In a moment of girlish folly, she allowed a high-flying young man to take her up in his phaeton, not realizing that he was drunk. When he dropped the ribbons, she recovered them, but could not avoid disaster.

The young man was killed. Rebecca survived, crippled, and with a reputation in tatters.

Against all expectation, her father has found someone who will marry her. Rebecca's life seems set, and she resigned to it. Then, Altimere of the Elder Fey enters her life—and everything changes.

Good book. because its plot is very dark for Sharon and Steve its not for everyone and not for children. We are looking forward to exploring where this leads.

The core of a good book lies somewhere in the middle of a truly yucky sado masochistic mind control fantasy. I've read some really bad books but this is a good book with a rotten core that really surprised me. I was looking fwd to trying a non Liaden novel and I'm a huge regency fan. I'd read the warnings but bought the ARC anyways because I can read just about anything and like the authors. Won't again. Just my 2 cents. To be fair the overall writing was their normal standard of excellence, this was just not my cup of tea.

3. Rick on 3/9/2008, said:

Great as usual, but as seen by the unprecedented 1&2 star reactions, much MUCH darker than their norm. Basically the entire book is a setup for later redemption. Betrayal, torture, rape, horror, hopelessness, all setting the stage to make future salvation more poignant. By itself, this book is a massive downer, but signs are in place for Love and Righting of Wrongs in the sequel(s). I'd seriously recommend waiting and reading along with book 2 to avoid major depression, but do read it then.

The story was repulsive. I certainly hope Lee and Miller aren't going to pursue this genre of violent sex. On top of that, the story was choppy and disjointed with the two plot lines unconnected until the last page. Bad job.

5. Marilynn on 1/28/2008, said:

The pace is fast and it is well-written, but the ending...it seems just like an excuse for portraying violence against women. There's no redemption here. The ending should have been written better. Maybe, a hint of what's to come. But no, it leaves you hanging--with questions. I was very disappointed, especially since it started out so intriguingly.

This well written book disturbs and disgusts me. The writing was enough to initally disguise the repulsive material. I wish I had never read it (expunge it from my memory), and this is one time that I would wish I could return this Webscription for a refund. (I am not asking for such a refund, because of my prior good experiences with Baen/Webscriptions)

This seems to be a rival for the Liaden Universe with regards to character and plot development. On my next payday I shall aquire this ARC.

This is one of the worse, most idiotic and cliched fantasies I've ever had the misfortune to pick up. If I want a stupid regency romance, I'll buy one, thanks. Blech. It looks to me like someone at Baen thought they could "bring over" romance readers to fantasy. Instead they'll lose their base readers with this tripe.

I HATED this book! The story itself was not bad, just very much outside of both my preferences and expectations from Lee and Miller. It was extremely dark, the treatment of the characters felt almost sadistic and the closing didn't satisfy. Even for a continuing saga. I wouldn't read a following book to again suffer with the downtrodden characters lack of either purpose or hope of redemption. Duainfey lacked a kernel of the optimism, or heart, I've come to expect. That being said, my expectations were formed from all the books, short stories and the online serial set in the Liaden universe. Just beware, if you're a fan from those stories, this probably won't be your cup of tea.

The rating should be 5 - the writing is superb, the twists are surprising. But I hope the final book does not have the cliffhanger that this ARC has!!! To get to the last 'page' and just hang there - practically in the middle of a sentence - is just evil. Evil, I tell you!
